Derek Bernstein is a native of London, where he received his BFA from  Goldsmiths College. He left for this country immediately after and attended Yale Norfolk on scholarship.  He then moved to New York City where he lived for almost thirty years, and exhibited work in many places, including solo shows at Katz & Brown, Griffin McGear, and more recently, the Kentler Drawing Center and the DTW Gallery, all in Manhattan.

During the ‘80s and ‘90s he worked with his choreographer wife as co-creator/set designer for the award-winning Amy Sue Rosen/Derek Bernstein Dance Projects.  Their company performed all over the United States and internationally, receiving grants from NYFA and the NEA, among others. Their work was televised several times on PBS and recorded for the Performance Library at Lincoln Center.  They received the Bessie Award (dance’s Oscar) for Lifetime Achievement in 2003.  Since his wife’s death, he has returned to painting full-time.

Bernstein has taught at the Studio School in Manhattan, as well as Haverford, Muhlenberg and Lafayette Colleges in Pennsylvania.  Additionally, his fresco workshop has always been well attended.

Most recently, Bernstein has shown at the Elgin Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, the New Hope Arts Center Abstraction Revisited and is currently featured in Bucks County Artists: A Cross Section at the Hicks Art Center at BCCC. He lives in Wrightstown, PA.
