Biography
Aubrey Levinthal is a still life and figurative painter living and working in Philadelphia. Recent exhibitions include The Painting Center, Kean University, Mrs. Gallery, Queens College, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Museum and Woodmere Art Museum. Her work has been featured in ARTnews, the NYSUN, Harper’s Magazine, the Philadelphia Inquirer and New American Paintings. Levinthal is the recent recipient of her second Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant and a residency at Ballinglen Arts Foundation in County Mayo, Ireland in 2017. She received an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2011. Her work is represented by Nancy Margolis Gallery, NY, who featured her work during the VOLTA NY 2018 art fair.
Artist Statement
Levinthal’s paintings explore the complicated, nuanced matter of everyday life. Using herself and those around her, these figurative paintings reflect drivers, lovers, eaters, bathers, painters; people experiencing the intimate, anxious, small feelings that make up contemporary life. However, her work relies as heavily on formal concerns of color, space and composition as it does on narrative in establishing these moods, often meaning they are distorted and rearranged realities, much like the accumulated memories themselves.
